Troop Recap: BSA Backpacking Trip to Stone Door & Alum Gap

Our scouts recently completed an unforgettable backpacking adventure in Savage Gulf State Park, exploring the famous Great Stone Door, taking in the views at Laurel Falls, and setting up camp at the scenic Alum Gap Campsite.

With 10 scouts taking the lead on the trail and 5 adult leaders providing support, it was a fantastic weekend of outdoor skills, team building, and spectacular Tennessee wilderness.

Trip Highlights

  • The Great Stone Door: We kicked off our trek taking in the awe-inspiring sights at the Stone Door overlook. The massive 10-foot-wide, 100-foot-deep crack in the sandstone cliff provided both a cool natural phenomenon to explore and an exciting trail into the gorge.
  • Side Trip to Laurel Falls: After heading deep into the backcountry, we took a hike out to Laurel Falls, enjoying the cascading water and lush forest surrounding the falls.
  • Hike to Alum Gap: Backpacking with all our gear on our backs, the scouts put their navigation skills to work along the trail.
  • Overnight at Alum Gap Campsite: Once we reached camp, scouts quickly set up tents, organized gear, and got dinner cooking.
  • Leadership in Action: A huge shoutout to our 10 youth leaders for taking charge of navigation, camp setup, and meal prep throughout the trip, and to our 5 adult leaders for keeping everyone safe along the way!
